Somehow, my New Year has started off with a virus that’s left me sitting around the house the past three days binge watching Queer Eye, sleeping a good three hours each night & keeping a balanced diet of cough drops & smoothies. But let’s be honest, I’m not just being the optimistic person that I am by saying this has given me A LOT of time to think about what I want my life to be like in 2020 & beyond.

For those of you who don’t know, I work for my Dad & his business partner. I’ve been incredibly lucky to find myself working from home, on the road fairly often, but ultimately making my own schedule. This position, while sometimes a little lonely, gives me the opportunity to dabble in things that I’m passionate about while not requiring me jumping ship with no foreseeable income – yes, this is why we now have a Bucket List Bound Podcast (Returning February 26th!). My options are very much open for 2020, & I’ve found this to be a blessing & a curse. There is so much that I want to do!!!

As I explore ALL of the different options this world has to offer, I’m quickly realizing how badly I want to write about it – this struggle; although seemingly stupid, is real. Not knowing what you want to do in life; not knowing what you’re “meant to do”, what you were put on this earth to provide to others… these are all things that I’m pretty sure EVERYONE goes through, yet very few of us talk about it. (Can I quickly highlight the nugget of information buried in the beginning of this paragraph?? I wanted to write about it. That’s a big sign in itself. Maybe I’m meant to focus on my writing?).

Moving on…
It may seem very ironic to all of you that someone who has a full list of wants wasn’t quite sure what she wanted to do with her life. But, you may consider how this world has raised us to believe that we were put on this world to build careers – you know, things that you are supposed to do day in & day out until you die. Some of us get lucky to find the thing they are “meant to do”; meaning something they truly enjoy that they just happen to also make money doing. (Kudos to them!) Then there are those who find a career & settle for one reason or another; they were told to stick with it, to never quit, to focus on the income rather than feeling fulfilled & as though their life has purpose. – I’d love to sit down with some of these people & have a long discussion about what it means to live life to it’s fullest.

Don’t you dare… I know what you’re going to say!

“But Amy, if everyone went out & found a job that they loved, we wouldn’t have any plumbers, garbage people, cleaning staff, waiters, etc.”

First things first – it is possible to find fulfillment in those positions! And many people do. But also, let’s consider how many people are actually reading this blog & preparing to change their lives. I assure you we will still have plumbers, garbage people, cleaning people, waiters, etc.

Second – we are downright brainwashed if we are thinking that we were put on this earth to do ONE thing. We are creative souls. To live our lives to their absolute fullest, we need to explore all of the options, figure out what we like & don’t like – regardless of what our best friends, significant others or parents like.

So this is the part that gets tricky… What do you want in life? What would allow your life to be more fulfilled? If you’re unsure of a career, consider a hobby to try. Start off small; learn guitar or jump rope or pancake art. Then try something else. Then another thing, then another. Slowly, you’ll be figuring out who you are & what you are capable of. One tiny piece at a time.

I think the most beautiful part of this process is the fact that any & all of these goals don’t need to relate in the slightest. If you’ve thought about becoming a cop, take a gun class. If you’ve considered writing a novel, take a course on novel writing. There’s a course for everything… & if you find one that doesn’t exist & you enjoy it, make one! (You might just make yourself a little fortune.)

The more you try, the more you know. And that’s just one piece to the creation of your very own bucket list. The other cool part? (Besides, of course, accomplishing a ton of interesting stuff?) You find more things that you want to try! – Let the self learning & self love begin!
Amy

And as for me? Well, the podcast will return February 26th. But I also have a few other fun things up my sleeve for 2020. Cheers to the New Year!
