How To Rebuild Confidence After Life Quietly Wrecks You

This isn’t about rock bottom. This is about those slow erosions in life that you don’t realize are happening until it feels like it’s too late. It can happen within a career, within a relationship, within motherhood, or following the loss of someone close to you. And when you finally look up, you’re left with an invisible burn that has you wondering how on earth you got to where you are right now.

It doesn’t matter if you’re riddled with guilt or devastated, and quite honestly, it doesn’t matter how you got here. No wallowing in self pity or asking yourself over and over and over how you got here. There’s not some magical moment when you’ll realized you’ve “found yourself” once again. When life quietly wrecks you, you’re actually meant to rebuild.

We were all lied to as kids. Confidence isn’t loud, shiny, or consistent. It doesn’t come from motivation, aesthetics, or pretending to be fine. “Feeling ready”, or “feeling like your old self again” are concepts that may never come to fruition.

Confidence is built when you’re still unsure.

STEP 1: Name What Actually Broke You
You know what’s incredibly uncomfortable when you’re struggling with something? Saying it out loud. If you do that, you are owning it, and owning it means sitting with the reality you are facing on a deeper level. In naming it, you take control. Somehow, in simply naming it, you take away it’s power. It’s almost like you’re saying, “Yeah, I see you a**hole. Bring it on.”

Did you lose your identity? Power? Self-esteem? Self-worth? Don’t just say it out loud, consider writing it down. When was the last time you felt confident? What moment do you believe lead to this loss?

Remember: you can’t rebuild what you don’t acknowledge.

STEP 2: Stop Trying To Become Who You Were
A really good friend of mine noticed something just a few months after I had my first child. She said that I was so focused on “getting back to me”. Everything I talked about was in the past. I wanted to get back to my pre-baby weight, back to work, back to running, etc. etc. The problem is, there is no going back. I have officially entered a new season of my life, and so have you, whether you’re a new mom or you just went through a bad breakup. You are not the woman that you were before and you never will be.

I instantly thought of Taylor Swift. She confirmed the turning point of her career, “The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now, because she’s dead.” No resurrection. Instead, she fully integrated her new reality with what little was left of her former self. Not only was it the best thing for her and her career, but it’s also the best thing for you. You get to move forward with serious self awareness, fully empowered, and ready to set and hold boundaries you’ve never had before. You’ve leveled up, and thank God for that.

STEP 3: Start Rebuilding Self Trust
Confidence grows from keeping even the smallest promises to yourself, and I know I’m not the only one who’s struggled with this one. The highlight here is that you can start embarrassingly small with this one: finish something you start, say no to someone and don’t explain further, do the thing even if no one ever sees it.

I want you to think about this in terms of building trust with a friend. If you’re keeping the big promises but not the small promises, are you really that reliable? No. You’re ruining your friendship with yourself. Consistency beats intensity every time.

STEP 4: Create Proof, Not Affirmations
Affirmations are great, but they don’t require action, which often leaves them feeling a bit hollow. Confidence requires evidence, and this is something you can collect looking back or in your day-to-day processes moving forward. Personally, I recommend both.

Start tracking your daily wins, and I’m not just talking about accomplishments, but the things that make you feel alive. Track the things that are special to you, and maybe not anyone else surrounding you.

Keep your wins list easily accessible for the hard days.

Consider asking ChatGPT to help you prove your worth in each circumstance that has you feeling lost.

STEP 5: Let Confidence Be Quiet
I’ll be the first to admit that it doesn’t quite feel like confidence when it’s quiet, but there is a power that comes with that too. Set and hold those boundaries without guilt, focus on calm decision making, limit explaining yourself, and give yourself the utmost respect day-in and day-out.

Just do everything you can to channel your inner Olivia Pope, ok? This is the shift from external validation to internal alignment.

I’d love to tell you that rebuilding your confidence starts and ends with you feeling like a badass, but that would be a lie. It’s uncomfortable, lonely, and often comes slower than you want. There will be moments when you feel like you backslide; television shows and movies that might trigger you and have emotions flooding back. But I can tell you that it’s worth it, and most days it will feel like you have some sort of control, which has been the most meaningful part for me.

You stop asking for permission. You start trusting your inner timing.

As you rebuild, you’ll also come to find that the confidence after the wreck is deeper, steadier, and more honest. You don’t need a comeback story, you need a foundation.

Something to think or journal about…
“What would I change if I trusted myself again, even just a little?”

See you!
